Discover Costa Rica, One Region at a Time
Visiting Costa Rica is not only about the beaches or the volcanoes. It’s rather about how such a small country can dramatically change its landscapes sometimes minutes down the road. Each area has its own distinct vibe, climate, and star attraction. So, when you’re making sense of the map, and trying to plan a route to discover Costa Rica, here’s a cheat sheet. Costa Rica, region by region, with one must-see stop in each.
Dominical Beach.
1. Central Valley – Volcán Poás
The starting point for many visitors, the Central Valley isn’t just about the chaotic cities. There are many wonderful things to discover just a short drive away. Head to Poás Volcano National Park to peer into one of the world’s largest active craters. It’s as dramatic as it sounds — and yes, the sulfur smell is free. As a bonus, drive a couple of kilometers beyond and visit La Paz Waterfall Gardens where you can get close and personal with rescued wildlife and learn about Costa Rican culture.
2. Caribbean – Puerto Viejo
Reggae beats, coconut rice, and sloth sightings? Welcome to the southern Caribbean. Puerto Viejo is where Afro-Caribbean culture meets surfer-chill beaches and national parks like Cahuita. While you’re at it, visit the Caribbean Botanical Garden where you’ll get to learn a lot about local tropical plants and wildlife.
Hanging Bridges in Mistico Park
3. Northern Plains – La Fortuna & Arenal
If Costa Rica had a greatest hits album, Arenal would be the cover. Waterfalls, hot springs, volcano views — and adventure activities for every energy level. Enjoy the rainforest from above while walking Mistico’s Hanging Bridges or just relax in Ecotermales, one of the local hot spring spas.
4. Guanacaste – Playa Conchal
Known for its dry climate and endless beaches, Guanacaste’s crown jewel is Playa Conchal. Crushed-shell sands and clear waters make it feel more Maldives than Central America. If trying to get off the beaten path, visit Sensoria, where you can dive into the natural rainforest at the base of one of Costa Rica’s most impressive volcanoes.
5. Nicoya Peninsula – Santa Teresa
For that barefoot, yoga-at-sunset, surf-eat-sleep-repeat lifestyle, Santa Teresa is the place. Remote enough to feel wild, developed enough for good coffee. Try going on a hike in Cabo Blanco Nature Reserve with the beautiful saline landscape of the Pacific Ocean.
Manuel Antonio National Park
6. Central Pacific – Manuel Antonio National Park
Where rainforest meets coastline and monkeys crash your beach day. Hike, snorkel, sunbathe — and keep an eye on your snacks. Try going off the beaten path and visit Villa Vainilla Spice Tour, with its immersive agroforestry plantation tour.
7. South Pacific – Uvita & Marino Ballena
This region is quieter and greener. In Uvita, walk the famous Whale’s Tail sandbar and time your visit for the annual humpback whale migration. Drive inland and visit Nauyaca Waterfall, one of the most beautiful waterfalls in the country.
8. Turrialba & Central Highlands – Turrialba Volcano & Coffee Routes
Less touristy and more rustic. Think misty valleys, archaeological ruins, and coffee farms — with the Turrialba Volcano casually looming in the background.
9. Osa Peninsula – Corcovado National Park
Often called the most biologically intense place on Earth, Corcovado is the final frontier. No filters needed — you’ll likely see tapirs, scarlet macaws, and maybe a puma.
No matter which region you visit, Costa Rica delivers in color, flavor, and natural spectacle. Ready to explore Costa Rica region by region? We say: take the long way around. Every detour is worth it.
